THE GEOMETRY OF OPPOSITES
Every point on a sphere has an antipode: the point directly opposite, reached by a straight line through the centre. Its latitude is mirrored across the equator, and its longitude is shifted by 180°.
Because about 71% of Earth is ocean and land is concentrated in the northern hemisphere, most drills surface in water. Only around 15% of land is antipodal to other land — parts of South America and East Asia, New Zealand and Iberia among them.
The 42-minute figure is the classic gravity tunnel: ignoring air, friction and rotation in a uniform-density Earth, a fall through any straight tunnel takes π√(R/g) ≈ 42 minutes. Layer depths follow the PREM reference model.
